Airborne Assault - IWM Duxford |
Hi
all the 2008 Reunion has now been and gone and what a terrific event
it was with over 274 attending the Gala Dinner. The Guests of Honour
this year were ex 1 Para Commanding Officer during our time in
Aden as the British withdrawal, Maj General Mike Walsh who was
accompanied by his good Lady. General Walsh had much to say
about the Battalion of his day and the Battalion of today and while
we all have our own preference and proud as we are we can rest assured standards have not been
lowered.

We also had the honour of the current RSM
from 1 Para, WO1 'Nobby' Clarke accompanied by CSM Andy Jones and we were
afforded a minor update on the Battalion and thier role within the limited
restriction surrounding those of Special Forces. One thing is certain
training has not stopped and in their case is more intense and persone. They meet the challenge with ghusto. Incidently the noble art of
socialising is still a major factor in the Airborne soldier. Many present
have fond memories of his father.
We were also honoured by another
ex member of 1 Para L/Cpl Frank Carson who spent most of the Saturday out
and about with the members before sitting on the top table at the Gala
Dinner. Frank as one can expect from the Ist Battalion ensured he did not
come last when he gave impromptu sessions of his undoubted comical talent
during the course of the meal, much to the delight of the
audience.

The end of the entertainment Frank
supplied culminated in the General finding sufficient reason to ask
the RSM and escorts to march him out in close order, after all the General
was never likely to match his comedy so as all good commanders know attack
is the best form of defence. Frank needn't have worried as he soon
returned to be presented much to his delight with a new set of wings on a
Airborne mug by Don Eaton above.

The New Drum
Following an appeal by member Richard Joyce
for the benefit of Carol Cecil the widow of the late
Roy Cecil of 1 Para. Members donated £352.00 and
the Commitee then discussed it and after speaking with Richard we agreed
to donate a further £250.00 to the fund and Richard Joyce has
very kindly donated the 1 para drum to the reunion club. This is now an
asset for all members to enjoy and thank you for donations and to
Richard for his effort and generosity.
MANY THANKS to all the
Airborne brothers and their Ladies who donated so generously to the
collection for the late ROY CECIL ex 1 Para. the money was given to
Carol, his widow, yesterday, on my way back from Blackpool. The sum handed
over was £609.28 !!!!!!, I am posting her thank you note to ARTHUR
MULLENDER tomorrow. Thanks to all the commitee members firstly for their
encouragement & help with the collection, but also for all the hard
work they put in to ensure we enjoyed our weekend AND WE
